Sita was late again. She saw the railway track “In a few seconds I can
be free.”
But the milk came rushing to her chest; where she had nestled together the
pain, the joy, and the duty of being a mother.
At home Ram waits with a stick in hand.

A little disturbing...considering what is waiting for her at home I don't think I would be in such an all fired hurry to get there.
ReplyDeleteIt depends her child is also waiting for her, so I can understand the hurry. Thanks so much Kathy.
DeleteSo she never did get home. Such a sad tale this one is.
ReplyDeleteMay be she never did or may be she did. Either way it is sad. :(
DeleteThanks Tulika for reading!
Oh, so sad. :(
ReplyDeleteYeah it is but a reality for many :(
DeleteOh that is sad more so because they are named Ram and Sita.
ReplyDeleteYeah I wanted to bring out the irony of it Suzy. Thanks for reading!
DeleteOh the dilemma of the poor mother. A child on one hand and a brute of a man on the other.
ReplyDeleteYes Rachna her heart is torned between both. Sad she doesn't know she has many other options. Thanks so much for reading!
DeleteThis was bitter sweet ...of hope and hopelessness at the same time
ReplyDeleteNaba I am glad you could sense hope in the story.
DeleteSad story of a woman who is a mother first and foremost. Hope someday her child grows up to become a true Ram or a true Sita.
ReplyDeleteYes Beloo we can only hope. Thanks for reading.
DeleteGrim. This may be the fate of many women. :(
ReplyDeleteSigh yes Archana :(
DeleteThis is terrifying, true and so vivid in depiction. It is a grim reality in so many urban, educated households that it is not funny. When will it end?
ReplyDeleteSfurti, glad to see you blogging again. Missed you tons!
Yes Shailaja. This is as real in urban India as in rural. Obviously education is not helping. I wish we knew what would help.
DeleteThanks for reading and thanks for kicking me back in blogging.
That is grim indeed!! Visiting your blog after a long time!! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Rosh, it is a grim reality.
DeleteWelcome back and I anyway wrote something after a long time :)
My heart goes out to women like her. How I wish they could run and just be free.
ReplyDeleteI agree Shilpa. Wish they knew they could just turn around and run away :(
DeleteThanks for reading!
Heart wrenching tale encapsulating many emotions in very few words. It is disheartening to know that so many women face this everyday in their life. Good one Sfurti, keep penning.
